Paranoid Times

Lucifer

Hell

L ucifer and Persephone looked tiny compared to the high and spiked backrests of their thrones. At their usual positions stood Quetzalcoatl and Baal.

“Your father is a psychological nightmare,” Persephone said. “I can’t help wondering when I will be randomly portalled to a horrid place. He never liked me.”

Did it mean Lucifer’s father would attack soon? It seemed a ridiculous thing to do. What was his motivation? To test his son, to see how far he had come along in the Inferno? Was he forgiving the worst of them first, just to torment the rest of them with paranoia, and uncertainty? Was this the work of Hephaestus? What could trigger the portal maker to betray Lucifer’s father? Hephaestus looked at the Almighty like his own patriarch. There was also the longing for respect from his biological father, Zeus. Was all this for Zeus’s adulation? Whatever was going on, someone was getting Lucifer’s most devoted and dangerous out of the way before attacking.

Why leave Quetzalcoatl at his side? Was it a personal score for someone to settle that they wanted both Lucifer and Quetzalcoatl here?

“It is Zeus’s doing.”

“What about your father?” Persephone looked at him in disbelief.

“He’s not random like this with his petty temper.”

“And you are random with your accusations. This is your father’s doing.”

“He already had his hissy fit and banished us here. That’s the end of it. It doesn’t make sense for him to mess with us like this.”

“I assure you it’s not my father.”

Was she part of a plot against him? Could they as a bloodline be that dedicated to one’s House? What was the point of allegiance shown if that were the case? Even Hephaestus would have to be a part of this plot. But Persephone? That jealousy of hers that almost led to her wrecking Lilith’s grave was still fresh in Lucifer’s mind, even if it happened centuries ago. Her previous actions weighed heavily against his sudden paranoia, but they weren’t proof of her plotting his demise. Foolish thinking. Persephone loved him, there was no doubt about in that. She wished on every blazing star falling in the sky for a day when Lucifer and her father would get along. Naturally, she would be conflicted beyond belief, instinctively defending her father, not wanting to believe he would go for the throne. Not like this.

A pall of gloom and paranoia had come over Hell’s residents. This was psychological terror quickly taking its toll on everyone on some level. Lucifer couldn’t help but wonder if he would be portalled next. To where? A one-on-one fight with Zeus? Or simply portalled into nothingness?
